ThereвЂ™s a very good chance this movie was the first impression of вЂњIndianвЂќ culture for many viewers - it was, apparently, even what got George Harrison interested in the sitar - which makes its depiction of their dominant religion as comically bloodthirsty even worse. The film doesnвЂ™t ascribe this religion to any one country or group, but it broadly references вЂњEasternвЂќ culture even while casting all white actors and using what is frequently Indian or Middle Eastern imagery. I finally got around to it the other weekend, and the filmвЂ™s comedy really is quite often surprisingly timeless and fun in its silliness.Д«ut thereвЂ™s also a lot about the movie that stands out very poorly five decades later: namely, the filmвЂ™s villains are an odd, offensive mashup of cultures, that seems to conflate Hinduism with Aztec sacrifices. I really didnвЂ™t expect people to have that reaction to that character the way that they did.IвЂ™d wanted to watch The BeatlesвЂ™ movie Help! for some time after having seen clips of its slapstick and absurdist humor in, I think, a film class years ago.

The anthology series moves forward into its second season as a classic Californian noir crime thriller/mystery - a mystical, spiritual occult crime cop drama conspiring around the development of a high speed railway system. It was only afterwards in retrospect when I was at the Emmys that I was like, вЂWow, IвЂ™m a big enough part of this show to be invited to the Emmys on behalf of the show even though IвЂ™m not nominated.вЂ™ But it was just something that I donвЂ™t think anybody expected including myself. Season 2 of True Detective premiered on June 21, 2015. вЂњI mean, everyone has an ego, but IвЂ™m like, вЂIf they want me, theyвЂ™ll call me,вЂ™ you know? And if not, I need to build a rich enough life apart from that to be happy. But did she perceive it that way herself? Given the attention that role garnered and the fact that DaddarioвЂ™s star is pretty powerful, itвЂ™s a bit surprising to hear she wasnвЂ™t on the True Detective premiere invite list to me.

There was no wrapping up the True Detective portion of our conversation without following up on one particular point Daddario mentioned - that premiere. The phone wonвЂ™t stop ringing!вЂ™ And all of a sudden, everyone in town wanted to meet with me and then I booked San Andreas. And then of course that episode aired and my manager called, and IвЂ™ll never forget it, I was sitting on my boyfriendвЂ™s couch and she calls me in the morning after the episode aired and she was like, вЂThe phoneвЂ™s been ringing off the hook all morning. вЂњI didnвЂ™t expect to have what I had happen happen, which was - itвЂ™s a long time ago now - getting naked on a show where I didnвЂ™t have a huge role, I didnвЂ™t know what to expect. So ultimately, did that tactical decision pay off? Did True Detective prove to be the resume game-changing Daddario hoped for? HereвЂ™s what she said: And that would look to Hollywood like, вЂOh, sheвЂ™s doing something different!вЂ™вЂќ That was where I sort of was at at that point. I just thought it would look good on my resume. вЂњThe tactical decision was, I went in for the audition and they seemed vaguely interested, and it was for a different role and I was like, вЂWell, theyвЂ™re vaguely interested and I love these actors and I love Cary Fukunaga and I want to be in this show, so let me force them to hire me.вЂ™ I thought I need something on my resume that shows that I can do something different, or something. So you just never know whatвЂ™s gonna happen, so I just try to do the best I can in whatever I choose to do and thatвЂ™s it.вЂќДaddario has called choosing to do True Detective a вЂњtactical decisionвЂќ in the past and elaborated a bit on the strategy she was implementing by making that choice:

I didnвЂ™t go to the premiere of that show and then it ended up being a huge thing for my career. I donвЂ™t even think I was invited to that premiere. I do have more knowledge and understanding of tracking and how things are gonna work, but True Detective, for example, which IвЂ™m sure we'll get to, itвЂ™s like, I didnвЂ™t see what was gonna happen from that coming at all. So IвЂ™ve tried to maintain my sanity or whatever my viewpoint on life is, I try not to put too many expectations on things. And the biggest jobs IвЂ™ve booked, I had no concept that I was gonna book them. вЂњThe biggest successes IвЂ™ve had in my career, I did not expect or they were completely out of the blue. While on Collider Ladies Night celebrating the debut of The White Lotus on HBO, Daddario took a moment to look back on some of her greatest successes thus far, and pinpointed True Detective as a big one:
